Philadelphia Gets Its Wings … Fans Overwhelmingly Select Wings as Name of Philadelphia’s New National Lacrosse League Franchise

SKYDIVER UNFURLS WINGS BANNER WHILE DESCENDING INTO WELLS FARGO CENTER PARKING LOT … TEAM HITS THE GROUND RUNNING IN TIME FOR 2018-19 SEASON

Philadelphia, PA (November 29, 2017) — Comcast Spectacor today announced the name of its new National Lacrosse League (NLL) franchise in grand fashion – a skydiver, high atop the Wells Fargo Center parking lot, unfurled a banner revealing the team’s name – the Philadelphia Wings – after descending from an airplane. The Wings will make their debut in the 2018-19 season (December through April) at the Wells Fargo Center.

Comcast Spectacor conducted an online poll (September 14 through November 13) asking Philadelphia-area fans to submit suggestions for the team name, generating more than 7,000 entries. Fans were then encouraged to vote for their favorite from the top three entries – Philadelphia Fire, Philadelphia Founders, and Philadelphia Wings. With more than 5,000 votes, the Wings were the winners of the Dunkin’ Donuts Name the Team Contest.

“The Wings are clearly the favorite, and we’re happy to give the fans what they want,” said Lindsey Masciangelo, Executive Director of Business Operations, Philadelphia Wings.

Comcast Spectacor partnered with GOBI advertising in Haddonfield, NJ, to design the team’s logo, which embodies the city and the fans, according to Masciangelo. “Respecting the fans’ desire for the Wings name, we wanted the look to feel fresh, but also pay homage to the history of indoor lacrosse in Philadelphia,” she said.

The Wings logo features a throwback to the previous team’s mark with a familiar “W,” but slightly refreshed. The color scheme features red, gold and charcoal, a combination that no other team in the NLL possesses. The “P” on the side of the uniform, representing Philadelphia, will serve as a secondary logo. It is also a connection to Comcast Spectacor’s other Philadelphia-area professional sports team, the Philadelphia Flyers, of the National Hockey League.

Season ticket memberships are currently on sale now through the team’s new website, www.wingslax.com or by calling 215-952-LAX1, and include exclusive benefits such as team access and events. Fans can also follow the team @NLLWINGS to receive behind the scenes information as the team is built over the next year.

Philadelphia previously had two professional indoor lacrosse teams, both named the Wings, who competed from 1986 through 2014 in the NLL, and from 1974-75 in the Eagle Box Lacrosse League.

The National Lacrosse League is North America’s premier professional indoor lacrosse league. Founded in 1986, the NLL ranks third in average attendance for pro indoor sports worldwide, behind only the NHL and NBA. The League is comprised of 11 franchises from across the United States and Canada: Buffalo Bandits, Calgary Roughnecks, Colorado Mammoth, Georgia Swarm, New England Black Wolves, Philadelphia Wings, Rochester Knighthawks, San Diego NLL, Saskatchewan Rush, Toronto Rock and Vancouver Stealth. The 2017-18 NLL season, commemorating the League’s 32nd year, begins in December. For more information, visit NLL.com and find the NLL on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
