Wings Lose Season Finale at Home

Philadelphia, PA – The Calgary Roughnecks jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and that ended up being the difference in an 18-13 Wings setback. Josh Currier had a career-high five goals, the highest single-game total for any Wings player this season, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an 11-point game for NLL leading scorer Dane Dobbie and a 10-point afternoon for Curtis Dixon. But the real difference-maker in the game was Calgary goaltender Christian Del Bianco, who frustrated the Wings with 46 saves and never allowed Philadelphia to gain extended momentum.

Calgary scored the game’s first goal 2:01 into the contest, but that was all they had until a four-goal flurry in two minutes and 34 seconds at the end of the quarter. Two goals each in that stretch by Dobbie and Riley Loewen gave the Roughnecks the five-goal advantage at the first quarter break.

The Wings picked up the first three goals of the second quarter, one from Jordan Hall and two from Kiel Matisz, to close within a pair. But in what turned out to be a game of runs, Calgary scored two more before halftime to take a 7-3 lead at the break, and then extended that lead to 9-3 with the first two tallies of the second half.

Currier scored all five of his goals in the final 24 minutes of the game. His first came 6:14 into the third quarter, the first of three Wings goals he scored in a row. After Kevin Crowley scored with 5:26 left in the frame, the Wings were back within three at 10-7.

But Calgary picked up six of the game’s next seven goals to distance themselves for good from Philadelphia. Only Currier’s goal with 4:13 left in the third interrupted the run for Calgayr, which led 16-8 after Rhys Duch scored 1:07 into the fourth quarter. The Wings outscored Calgary 5-2 in the fourth quarter, with Currier picking up his fifth on the power play with 1:31 to go.

Doug Buchan and Gowan Abrams split the contest, with Buchan playing 20:41 and Abrams 39:19 in his first action with the team. Buchan was assessed the loss with eight saves on 17 shots, while Abrams stopped 26 of the 35 he faced.
