Wings Acquire Dominey and McCannell in 3 Team Trade

PHILADELPHIA (August 4, 2023) – The Philadelphia Wings announced today that they have acquired defenseman Scott Dominey, transition player Mike McCannell, and the 18th overall pick in September’s NLL Draft in exchange for Kiel Matisz, Trevor Baptiste and the rights to both Matt Anderson and Kyle Jackson in a massive three-team deal with the New York Riptide and the San Diego Seals.

Kiel and Trevor will be missed but today’s move was an opportunity to inject youth and speed into the roster. Along with the addition of Holden Cattoni last week, we believe that Scott Dominey and Mike McCannell help us accomplish that, particularly in transition, said Head Coach & General Manager Paul Day. These moves also provide us with additional salary cap flexibility and draft assets to continue to add pieces. Both players will make immediate impacts and we are excited to see them in Wings uniforms.

26-year-old defenseman and Ontario native Scott Dominey is an alumnus of the Nippising University Lakers Men’s Lacrosse team where he was a two-time scoring champion and 2018 MVP of the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association’s East Division. He began his NLL career as the 57th overall pick by the Toronto Rock in the 2018 NLL Draft and joins the Wings after two seasons with the New York Riptide. Dominey has scored 26 goals and recorded 14 assists as a defender in 45 games since joining the league.

McCannell, the 5th overall pick in 2021 by San Diego, comes to Philadelphia following his rookie season with the Seals. He scored one goal and recorded nine assists in his first 17 games as an NLL player. An alumnus and former captain of Stony Brook University’s Men’s Lacrosse team, McCannell left his mark on the Stony Brook program after playing in 63 games over the course of five season and finishing his collegiate career with 135 points, 74 goals, and 61 assists and named twice to the All-America East First Team.

Kiel Matisz and Trevor Baptiste leave Philadelphia after both spending the past four seasons with the Wings. Last season, transition player and former captain Matisz scored five goals and recorded 26 assists. Baptise recorded two goals and four assists with the Wings in 2022-23.

Kiel Matisz has been a fantastic leader both on and off the floor for the organization. He was integral in establishing the locker room culture and team identity from the franchise’s first days, said Day. Trevor was a difference-maker at the face-off circle and developed into a quality box lacrosse player. Having been a part of this league and sport professionally myself for more than 30 years, I empathize with his reasons for requesting a trade to a west coast team to play closer to home.”

“Both Trevor and Kiel’s impact on the Wings and the greater Philadelphia lacrosse community will be felt long into the future,” said Marc Zamarin, President of the Philadelphia Wings. “They committed countless hours over the last several years to supporting dozens of local programs and were tremendous ambassadors of the Wings. We cannot thank them enough for their efforts, and we wish them well with their new teams.”
